Wish I had a kid - just so I could send them to such a school! Great article Noah :)
Let's hope this is the beginning of a new way to educate our future generations, whether it's schools or other government/retail or commercial buildings.

Great question! It would be interesting to see what the long-term maintenance budget looks like. Since a lot of what they are doing on the energy efficiency side is "passive" (solatubes, insulation, orientation), meaning that it is built into the structure there is no extra maintenance on that part. With the "active" energy components like solar PV and geothermal heat pumps, there is also no extra maintenance.

We didn't have any of those fancy solar tubes or multi-flush toilets when i went to school in Middletown. I'm assuming this isn't one of those "pubic" schools. I would like to know how much more an operation such as the Lucy School costs to maintain over time compared to a concrete box version.

I've heard about straw bale construction for a long time, but never seen homes that look this "normal." Is there a "typical" per square foot construction cost range?

Very seriously considering taking some of the money that's been sitting around (rescued from the stock market) and investing in a solar system for our house. Any return is better than a savings account. Thanks for the information.

Really enjoyed listening to and seeing the power point presentation on Wind Power. It helped to answer some basic questions I had about cost, feasibility and whether or not we had enough wind in Frederick to warrant this type of application. Sounds like we do and if I had one now...I'd be making lots of electricity!

Thanks for making this type of info available.
